Kevin and I participated in Homeless Resource Day 2009. We learned that AA County is the first to hose such an event and the other counties in MD will soon be hosting their own events. I was in line first to get my person that I would be helping throughout the day. I couldn't have had a better person to help. He was an amazing guy who had a great story but was still faithful in the Lord. We spent about 3 hours together before he gave me a hug and left with his goodies. Next, I had a family...a 17 year old girl with a almost 3 year old. The 3 year old was full of life and loved hanging on to me all day. We listened to the entertainment and she clapped her hands to the music. Finally, I assisted a woman who needed some assistance at the mental health booth. We got her the appointments she needed, she insisted on a hug and then she was on her way to pick up her children. Kevin was partnered with a man who required wheelchair assistance and the two of them spent the day together. I didn't see much of Kevin that day but when I did, he was cracking up from the jokes his partner was telling. As we were waiting for the bus to take this guy to a shelter, I asked him if Kevin took good care of him and his response was "Oh yes, he is the most patient man." I joked that he had to have patience to deal with me and the man laughed. :-)
It was funny to see that at lunch, most people wanted the salad instead of the pasta with meatballs. I guess fresh vegetables is something we take for granted. I also heard that many get pasta in the shelters all the time so a salad is a special treat.
This was such an amazing event and I'm glad we were able to be a part of it. We are already looking forward to the next event.
